ZitZot: Sony Ericsson goes green with new C901

Sony Ericsson Thursday introduced two new environmentally friendly handset phones, the C901 GreenHeart and Naite, which Sony Ericsson said will be sold in smaller packaging, come with all-digital user manuals, use recycled materials and consume less energy overall with lower-power chargers.

Sony Ericsson GreenHeart C901 and Naite

According to Sony Ericsson, the C901 GreenHeart’s phone casing is made from at least 50 percent recycled plastics and its color comes from a water-based paint. A light sensor changes the brightness of the C901 GreenHeart’s display, Sony Ericsson said, to adjust to its surroundings and consume less energy. The C901 GreenHeart includes a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, Xenon flash and smile-shutter, and also has a 2.2-inch, 240 x 320 display, A2DP Bluetooth, a Memory Stick Micro M2 card slot and Google Maps installed.

The Naite phone, pronounced “night-tee,” also uses smaller packaging and is built from recycled plastics. It comes with a charger, EP300 GreenHeart, that uses 30 miliwatts, a fraction of the 200 milliwatts seen on most phone chargers. According to specs provided by Sony Ericsson, the phone has basic e-mail and texting abilities and can support video phone calls. The Naite includes a 2-megapixel camera.

Sony Ericsson hopes the GreenHeart technology reduces company carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent within six years and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent within the same time period.

ZitZot: 3 year old toddler buys $12k digger online

Sarah Quinlan, a New Zealand mom, went to take nap after having made some online bids on toys. When she came back, her 3-year-old had taken over the computer and bought a much more serious toy: a real earth mover for a cool 20,000 New Zealand dollars (about $12,300).

According to Rodney Times, Pipi Quinlan was happily clicking away on the keyboard while her parent was asleep and ended up being the winner of a Kobelco digger, a gigantic earth-moving vehicle.

Sarah had the shock of her life when she found out via e-mail which auction her account had won. She immediately called popular New Zealand auction site TradeMe, and the seller, to explain what happened. She added that her little girl was kind of a girly girl and not generally into earth movers.

ZitZot: Viriginia Health database compromised, hackers asking for ransom

“I have your [expletive] In *my* possession, right now, are 8,257,378 patient records and a total of 35,548,087 prescriptions,” the hacker said in a ransom note.  “Also, I made an encrypted backup and deleted the original. Unfortunately for Virginia, their backups seem to have gone missing, too. Uhoh :( For $10 million, I will gladly send along the password.”

The Virginia Prescription Monitoring Program website is used to help pharmacists track prescription drug abuse, and has the records of 8 million state residents available through the network.  The network, along with other portals connected to the Virginia Department of Health Professions, is still unavailable at the moment.

ZitZot: Palm EOS – budget competition for iPhone

Palm is upping its game with a new budget phone rumored to launch this fall on AT&T. Deemed to be another iPhone rival with a smaller price tag, the Palm Eos (or Pixie/Castle) sports a size 0 silhouette in a candy-bar form factor with a non-slideout QWERTY keyboard. Preliminary specs leaked by Engadget point that Eos will cost $99 (after a $250 rebate) and will come with 4GB of on-board storage (Pre will come with 8GB), a 2-megapixel camera with flash and video capture (3-megapixels on the Pre), A-GPS and Palm’s WebOS (which will debut on the long-expected Palm Pre).

The Palm Eos is said to be 0.42 inches (10.6 mm) thin and weighs just 3.5 ounces (100 grams). Eos’s 2.63-inch capacitive touch screen sports a 320 by 400 pixels resolution, giving it 80 pixels fewer than either the iPhone’s or Pre’s display. Eos will be a 3G phone (HSPA capable) and extra connectivity comes via Bluetooth 2.1 (with A2DP and EDR – so you can listen to stereo music wirelessly) and a micro USB port (2.0).
